Yulu Miracle - app based electric scooters

Image result for yulu miracleThose of you who live in Bangalore, especially in places such as Indiranagar, Koramangala and Whitefield may have noticed different looking and noiseless blue scooters whizzing past you as you are stuck in traffic. These new scooters that can be hired through a mobile app called Yulu are used by all age groups. Currently, a majority of people (including me) use it for joyrides rather than optimizing their travel.

For those of you who still have no idea, refer to the picture above!
These electric scooters that are provided by Yulu are known as 'Miracles' and can be hired per 10 minutes through their app that can be downloaded on the Play Store as well as the App Store.
Having clocked at least 15 hours on these exciting new scooters in the past few weeks, I have many stories to tell.

Although there is more awareness about these scooters today, as close as three weeks ago, barely anyone had any idea about it. Riding these scooters were fun and the closest I could get to riding a powered vehicle being a 17 year old. On my various trips, I have been at the receiving end of a lot of stares, laughs and enquiries. The stares are from all types of people, the laughs are from bikers who can go faster than me (i.e., >25 kmph) and the enquiries are from people my age and younger, parents whose kids have been pestering them to try it out, grandparents (though generally the grandfathers) who want to try it out and most importantly - our sacred auto drivers who are amazed by the pick up these scooters have.
I was not spared by even food delivery boys (specifically Zomato ones) who were willing to trade their scooters for a test ride on the Yulu Miracle. Noticing the lack of a registration plate, they remarked that they should start using these scooters that costs only Rs. 60 an hour because it would be cheaper than paying bribes and fines to our dear traffic cops even when they themselves were at fault for jumping signals to deliver food as quickly as possible. They added their bags can be placed on top of the battery.

Over the last three weeks, I have mastered using Yulu. A couple of days after first riding it, a classmate and I decided to go 'Yuluing' (a term that I take credit for coining) and went out looking for two Miracles. After having walked for almost a kilometer, we coincidentally bumped into two other classmates and their friend looking for the same scooter. However, no scooter was found. This was the second time the app had glitched. Overlooking the minor setback, all five of us made a dash to look for our Yulus since it was scarcely available as it was a Friday evening. The car was called for and the classmate with whom I had started my journey and I got in and we sped away to the next Yulu zone. I found a scooter but she wasn't as lucky. While I started my trip, she got back into the car and I followed the car to the next Yulu zone, hoping that we would not be beaten by the other three to the same zone and more importantly - the app would not glitch for the third time. We were not let down this time.
This weekend, after a week's sabbatical from Yuluing (because of the deep impact it had had on my pockets), I resumed Yuluing and noticed a drastic change. Despite it being a Saturday, the number of Yulus available were many. This is possibly because of the fact that the security deposit required to ride the Yulu has increased from Rs. 100 to Rs. 250. The steep increase has negatively impacted them. Although I topped up my deposit and continued to ride, another change was visible.
In Indiranagar, where the Yulus are most popular, the number of queries and stares have dwindled. Even in areas such as Church Street and MG Road where Miracles are not available, the number of queries has reduced.

However, my interst in these scooters is unabated. They perform really well and are easy to use and hire, except for a couple of glitches here and there. Although I understand the rationale behind the increasing the security deposit, I hope that it will not be increased to such a price that it makes it unaffordable for the common man. Having used as well as seen the damage caused to Yulu's other service - their on-demand cycle hire one, I understand why the security deposit is being increased but so far, I have thankfully not seen any major damage caused to any Miracle. I hope that the public treats these scooters fairly to ensure that they can be used sustainably.

On a side note - if anyone in Yulu reads this article, please DM me and I will share an invoice for amount of marketing that I have carried out and business that I have brought for your company. I hope that at least the cost of my rides so far can be compensated :)

  1. Very nice one @Sanjith Rao. Informative, instructional and will encourage more users to use it for short transports, even non-recreational.

If docking stations are less than 250m apart in the hot-spots & areas of operation, this has the potential to seriously redefine the last-mile transportation challenge.

Yulu must consider pro-actively move the bikes by their transport trucks from delivery zones to pickup zones (like metro stations) during the peak traffic hours.

iOS 7 Update for Apple Devices

There is an OS update for iPads, iPhones and iPods (only for some generations). In this update there are many changes. The button on the right side of your iPads and iPhones now can be used to either, lock screen rotation, mute, pause or play your music. Lock Screen: In the older version to unlock the phones/tablet we had to swipe at the bottom part at the screen. Now we can swipe anywhere on the screen. As you can see in the picture, I have circled something at the bottom. If we swipe upwards we get many shortcuts. We can pause, play, change music tracks, increase/decrease volume, put the tablet/phone into airplane mode, Turn On/Off Wifi/Bluetooth/Do Not Disturb Option and mute our device. We can also view the current time in different time zones. The keypad that we see when we unlock the phone is also different.Changing the brightness is also an option. Here is a picture of this shortcut panel and the unlock iPad keypad. Visiting the Kasturinagar (KA-03) RTO - a tumultuous but manageable experience to get a Learner's/ Driver's License without an agent/ driving school

Ask anyone, and I can guarantee that they will have a story (and in most cases, many stories) about their trip, or rather, numerous trips to the RTO for something as simple as getting a Learner's License (LL) or a Driver's License (DL). In this blog, I hope to make your life a tad bit easier by guiding you through the entire process, which may seem easy at first but is full of (overcome able) challenges if you know what you are doing. I turned 18 in January this year, and besides cutting a cake, I worked on my LL application online. I challenged myself to complete the entire LL to DL process by myself and without the help of an agent or a driving school, unlike what the majority do. The lengthy application process and multiple visits to the RTO, impressed upon me why most people decided to pay a little extra to get an agent to do it for them. Still, I was determined not to pay a single rupee more than the official cost. I succeeded.  Do note that this answer is concerning the K...

Plan A, Plan B. And Plan C?

I wrote this in May 2026 and then left it sitting in my drafts for six weeks. Partly because it feels more personal than what I usually put online. Partly because writing honestly about uncertainty is uncomfortable when most of us are busy performing certainty. And partly because I wasn’t entirely sure I believed all of it yet. I’m still not sure. But perhaps that’s the point. So, here goes. ----- May 2026   Two years ago, I moved back to India. I hadn't planned on it. In fact, if you'd told me in 2020, when I packed my bags and left Bangalore for France, that I'd be back in four years, I'd have laughed it off as a failure of imagination. The plan had always been to stay abroad  and build a career in Europe. The universe, well, had other plans.   Four years abroad had been, by most measures, a good run. Two years in France at Sciences Po,  a well-paid summer internship in Paris, the youngest funded researcher on a research project between Princeton, Columbi...

Praying Mantis

Once a Praying Mantis was lying in my living room. I took it onto my hand and it felt scared for 5 minutes. Then when I did not harm it,it did not feel scared. It crawled all over my body. When it went near my neck it started to itch. I then told my mother to remove it. Then I looked at it. It was doing something with its whiskers. After a little time I put it near my plants. After that I went to tell my mother that I put the Praying Mantis on the plants. By that time it flew away. Here is a picture of a Praying Mantis on my T-Shirt:

What I did on my 1 day holiday

On 16 of February 2011 there was a holiday, since it was the festival of "Id". I played with my sister and her friends. We played badminton first. After that we got found a few seeds and put them in a pot that was abandoned. We also put leaves. Then we put a lot of water into the pot and then mixed it. While we had gone to the jogging track my friend stayed back. Once we came back my friend told me that while we had gone a cat had come smashed the pot and ran away.
